The Power of Integrity: How a Coworker’s Deception Handed Me My Best Client (and a Lifelong Friend)

During my very first years in agency recruiting, I quickly learned just how cutthroat and competitive this industry can be. It is easy to fall into the trap of looking at every colleague as a rival.

Fortunately, I had an ally—a coworker who started on the exact same day as me. Early on, we made a pact: the best way to make placements and serve our candidates was to work as a team. Instead of selfishly hoarding job orders, we collaborated, shared talent, and supported one another.

That collaborative approach has served me well throughout my entire career. Over the years, I’ve watched plenty of recruiters take the selfish route, believing it would make them more money. But in the long run? It’s always a losing proposition.

Not everyone in our office shared that philosophy.

At one point, I was working alongside a recruiter who crossed a major line—they lied to a hiring manager about a candidate. But this hiring manager wasn’t someone you could pull a fast one on. She was exceptionally savvy. The moment she caught the lie, she bypassed the recruiter entirely, walked straight to the owner of our agency, and laid down an ultimatum:

"If you force me to work with this recruiter again, I will take my business elsewhere and never look back."

The owner immediately called me into their office, laid out the wreckage of the situation, and asked if I would step in to salvage the relationship and take over the account. I was given a fair warning: this client was incredibly demanding, knew exactly what she wanted, and was a fierce advocate for her people.

I took a deep breath and stepped up to the plate.

I met with her, fully prepared for a tough, hyper-critical client. Instead, what I found was a leader who simply valued honesty above all else. Because I came into the relationship with transparency and a collaborative mindset, we clicked instantly.

What started as a desperate attempt to save a damaged client relationship turned into a goldmine. She became the source of some of my best career placements and undisputedly my absolute best client.

But it went way beyond business. Over the years, that "demanding" hiring manager became a truly close friend—someone I still see and catch up with to this day.

In agency recruitment, the temptation to take shortcuts or spin the truth to hit a quota can
